The Road Less Traveled

What drove these friends to embark on such an unconventional adventure? Their decision to go against the mainstream route was motivated by their desire to uncover hidden gems, experience lesser-known cultures, and truly challenge themselves mentally and physically.

Starting their journey in Cairo, the group headed east instead of south, venturing into uncharted territories and embracing the unknown. Their reliable 4x4 vehicle became their home as they traveled through the desolate landscapes of the Sahara Desert, encountering remote villages and tribes along the way. The experience was far from comfortable, but the rewards were priceless.

An Immersive Cultural Experience

By going against the flow, the friends found themselves immersed in the rich tapestry of African culture. They had the opportunity to live with the Maasai people in Kenya and Tanzania, learning about their customs, traditions, and way of life. They danced around campfires, shared stories under star-filled skies, and gained a deeper understanding of the human spirit.

Each country they crossed presented unique challenges and rewards. Navigating through thick jungles in Uganda and Rwanda, they encountered gorillas in their natural habitat, an encounter that left them in awe of the beauty of wildlife conservation. They delved into the history of Zimbabwe and Zambia, visiting iconic landmarks such as Victoria Falls and the Great Zimbabwe ruins.

The Unforeseen Obstacles

Of course, traveling in the wrong direction came with its fair share of obstacles. The group faced treacherous terrains, vehicle breakdowns in remote areas, and the constant need to adapt their plans. Despite these challenges, their determination and resilience propelled them forward.

One of the most memorable moments of their journey was crossing the Democratic Republic of Congo. Renowned for its difficult and dangerous roads, the friends had to rely on local knowledge and assistance to navigate through this politically complex region. As they ventured deeper into Congo, they were rewarded with breathtaking sights, encountering rare wildlife and breathtaking landscapes that few travelers ever get to witness.

A Journey of Self-Discovery

Beyond the physical challenges and awe-inspiring landscapes, this unconventional journey also became a powerful catalyst for self-discovery. With each passing mile, the travelers learned to let go of expectations, embracing the unpredictability of life on the road.

They found comfort in the simplest of things – a cup of tea shared with a stranger, a conversation with a local fisherman, or a night of stargazing in the Sahara Desert. They learned to appreciate the precious moments that make life worth living and gained a renewed sense of gratitude for the world and its people.

The Wrong Direction, the Right Choice

As the four friends reached Cape Town, basking in the glow of the setting sun, they realized that their decision to travel in the wrong direction was, in fact, the right choice. Their extraordinary journey had allowed them to truly connect with the essence of Africa in a way that no guidebook or predefined route ever could.

Cairo to Cape Town in the wrong direction had become a deeply personal adventure, etching memories that would last a lifetime. It had taught them that the true essence of travel lies not in the destination, but in the experiences and connections made along the way.

So, if you find yourself planning an adventure of a lifetime, consider taking the road less traveled, even if it means going in the wrong direction. Embrace the unexpected, immerse yourself in different cultures, and let the journey guide you towards self-discovery. Cairo to Cape Town in the wrong direction may just be the adventure that changes your life forever.

It was supposed to be a 9-month-long Cairo-to-Cape Town adventure. Kim Kennamer, never accused of being in a hurry, spent months planning every detail. Yet, from the moment she stepped off the plane—on the opposite end of the continent from her intended route—she began traveling in circles, sometimes even backwards. The trip took over four years, and she never looked at her itinerary at all.

Sometimes daunting, often humorous, Always a Detour recounts one woman’s unplanned travels through 17 African countries. Impromptu trips in crowded matatus, overloaded ferries, and hitched rides down pot-holed roads led to sand dunes, rainforests and sprawling markets as well as confounding toilets, tsetse flies, AK-47s, the occasional landmine and something called Pee Cola. More importantly, discarded plans brought about encounters with people as diverse and inspiring as the continent itself. Ultimately this is the story of a woman who learned that when she stopped trying to write the script, a life truly worth living began to unfold.
